Handlebar-moustached Emmett J. Scanlan has had a long career of niche roles.. He appeared in the Justin Timberlake-produced MTV series The Phone, and documented his quest for fame in Irish reality series Hollywood Trials.

His acting career was only part-time until 2002, when he became a dad. Oddly enough, the birth of his daughter drove him away from wanting financial security and he instead decided to pursue his acting career on a full-time basis.

Just before joining the cast of Hollyoaks in 2010, he played the title character in independent film Charlie Casanova and won lots of awards for his portrayal of the mentally unstable villain. His portrayal of resident creep Brendan Brady (does he always play psycho characters who have the same letters at the beginning of both of their names?) in Hollyoaks has gone down well with critics, too. Just one year after joining the Hollyoaks cast, he won Villain of the Year and Best Newcomer at the British Soap Awards, and was nominated in the Best Actor category.

He is set to appear in a 2012 BBC drama, The Fall with fellow Hollyoaks actors Bronagh Waugh and Karen Hassan, which airs later in the year.
