Adam Thomas has announced his new role following his shock departure from Emmerdale

Adam Thomas only confirmed his departure from Emmerdale last week, but he's already snagged himself a brand new role.

The cheeky chappy, who announced that he would be leaving the soap after eight years last Thursday, has today revealed that he will be playing the titular role in Christmas panto Jack and the Beanstalk over the festive period!

Reuniting with his old Waterloo Road co-star Denise Welch, he will be performing at Newcastle's Times Square theatre.

Adam said: "I'm really looking forward to this. It's a massive change for me – I've been in Emmerdale for eight years now and going from that straight onto stage is a huge leap!"

The 28-year-old dad-of-one credited his stint in the I'm A Celeb! jungle with giving him the confidence to try new things.

He added: "I'll miss Emmerdale, the people are amazing down there but I just needed to do this after the jungle. The jungle pushed me out of my comfort zone and taught me to just go for it. This year was the right time for me to leave, it's going to be sad but right now I'm looking forward to the future."

Bless him!

Adam continued: "I can’t wait to meet the Geordie lot this Christmas and have a laugh with them! Working with the legend Denise Welch will be amazing after first working with her 10 years ago. Now her character is my guidance in this show – almost like in real life really!"

Denise, who played languages teacher Steph Haydock alongside Adam as Donte Charles in Waterloo Road, will play Mother Nature in her hometown of Newcastle.

She said: "I've known Adam since he was knee-high to a grasshopper, we've always got on and he's bound to bring this cheeky-chap persona to the stage.

"I'm really excited to be playing the Geordie funny fairy in my hometown. Geordies love their own and I think with Adam not being a Geordie, along with a few of the other cast members, we can really play on that!"

The show will also star Sam Glen, who has had small roles in Coronation Street and Doctors, will play Jack's brother, Simple Simon.

Will this open more on-stage doors for Adam? Will we be seeing him in Hamlet next?! Who knows...
