According to the study, commissioned by Matalan, British people still think happiness is more important than money and the family pet is seen as more important than the in-laws.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Beckhams topped the poll as the ultimate ‘modern family’, closely followed by Jamie Oliver, his wife Jools and their children.

Almost half of the people asked insisted their dog is an important part of the family, and placed them as just below grandparents and just above in-laws in terms of importance.

Jamie Oliver's family came a close second to the Beckhams

Behavioural expert Mark Earls said: “Ultimately, what we want for our families is what we’ve always wanted for those we love – health and happiness.

“However much the shape and the structures and the participants shift, it seems the same old truths abide. The family is here to stay.”

Matalan;s new campaign Made For Modern Families is all about celebrating family life today, in all its shapes and sizes.

Managing director Jason Hargreaves said: “Family is at the heart of our business and we’re committed to being there to help families, whatever their makeup or wherever they’re from, in everything we do.”
