Gemma Merna's character was a bubbly, ditzy, blonde and fans were devastated when she tragically died after being on the show for eight years.

Throughout her time on Hollyoaks, Carmel was unlucky in love and one of her main storylines was dealing with the scar she got on her face after being burnt on a tanning lamp.

However, her exit was huge – dying during a train crash.

When she left the show she tweeted: "Well what an amazing last episode for #CarmelMcQueen thank you so much to @Hollyoaks @Channel4 for the past 8 years and such an amazing cast"

At the time the actress told Unreality TV: "I am ecstatic with the storyline that was given to me – it is fantastic and it will go down in soap history."

And now the actress has now spoken about her exit. Talking to Daily Star Sunday she confessed: "I left because I didn't want fans to get bored of her.

"I didn't want them to think 'Oh God, Carmel's doing that again… How many times has she done that storyline?"

Gemma's character was engaged three times and all three times her fiancées died.

She then added: "It's a shame they didn't take the character in a different direction. In Hollyoaks there is always a death – that's why I felt like it was time to go."

Even though her character has been killed off, Gemma has admitted there's no hard feelings because it's encouraged her to try other things.

Gemma is still an actress, but is also a yoga teacher too! She even came to Closer to give us a class...

She also confessed that people thought she was exactly like her character Carmel, saying: "People assumed I was ditzy and a bit stupid and that I dress like her and wear tons of make-up.

"But now I've left, people know me as Gemma. It's nice that people see that now."
