Madonna took to Instagram and Twitter to show her support for the victims of the Orlando massacre, however the post received a lot of backlash.

On Sunday 12 June, Omar Mateen, 29, opened fire at Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, killing 49 people and injuring 53.

Paying tribute to America’s worst ever mass shooting, Madonna shared a photo from the time she kissed Britney Spears at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards, with the words “Gay or Straight, no hate” adorned across the image.

She captioned the post: “Stop Hate. Stop Violence. #revolutionoflove”.

However fans were not impressed with Madonna’s attempt to show support for the horrific attack as well as the LGBTQ community.

On Instagram, users wrote:

“You should be ashamed of yourself. Using your publicity stunt to make a point in this awful event.”

“@madonna sorry Orlando isn't about u! or Britney! surely you could have picked a better picture to represent the tragedy! just saying [sic]”

“@madonna I am disgusted this is all about you and not the LGBT community and those poor folks that got massacred, as a gay man this pic disgusts me and shows all you care about is yourself.”

Whilst on Twitter, others said:

Following this post, Madonna posted another image of herself quoting #ArtForFreedom, which reads: “you cannot use religion to treat other people badly. You cannot use God’s name to treat other people badly. We all deserve love.”

In the caption, she wrote: “Pray for Peace in the World. Pray for Orlando.”
