Admitting that she found the situation "difficult and stressful" to talk about, Michelle wrote: "I was deeply saddened to hear of Ray and Emma’s separation at the weekend.

"Myself and Hugh have met them a number of times and I have always thought of them as one of the strongest couples out there.

"It goes to show you never know what happens behind closed doors.

"Emma is such a beautiful girl inside and out and Ray has always been lovely, too."

Writing in her OK! blog, Michelle Heaton added firmly: "Whilst I'm not going to discuss someone's personal life in my blog, I have reached out to Emma to see if she's OK so she knows where I am if she needs me."

It has raised questions for some as to why Michelle did not offer her support to Ray, who released a statement announcing the split last week.

The former Dancing On Ice star said at the time: “Unfortunately the speculation is true and Emma and I have regrettably parted ways.

"Out of respect for the privacy of my family I don’t want to delve into my private life too much; however what I will say is that our lives, after a period of time, have gone down separate paths."

Ray added: “Despite this obviously being a very difficult period in my life I am keeping busy with my new music and will be continuing with my UK tour and the release of my new single as planned.”

Ray Quinn and West End star Emma Stephens got engaged on Christmas Day in 2010 and had a beach wedding in Barbados in March 2012.

They welcomed their son, Harry Frank, in August 2012.
