Coronation Street actress Nicola Thorp has revealed that she has suffered sexual abuse at the hands of many men during her years in the acting business.

Nicola, 28, opened up about the abuse she herself has suffered after allegations have been mounting around Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein.

The actress, who made headlines last year after she was sent home for refusing to wear high heels, spoke out about her past traumas on her Twitter account.

Nicola, who has starred in Corrie since earlier this year as Nicola Rubenstein, posted five explicit tweets explaining that she, too, had suffered sexual abuse at the hands of men.

Her first four tweets were summaries of what had happened in her past.

She then posted a screenshot of a note she had written alongside the tweet: "If you think you don't know a woman who has been sexually harassed. You're wrong," adding the hashtag #metoo, which was started by Charmed actress Alyssa Milano.

Nicola's note read: "These experiences of harassment are not limited to those working in the entertainment industry.

"Women of all professions are subjected to this kind of unacceptable behaviour on a daily basis and are pressured, forced or blackmailed into situations that make them feel uncomfortable, violated and defenceless.

"That they may lose their job if they do not comply. That they will be judged if they do speak out. That it was somehow their fault. It is never their fault.

"It should not require courage to speak out against sexual harassment, because there should be no reason to fear the consequences."

She ended the powerful post with: "It's time for change."

She was inundated with supportive tweets, but many people were shocked by what Nicola had to say which showed just how unaware most people are of the widespread sexual abuse which occurs.

We wish all women who are coming forward the best.
