Prince William has opened up about the loss of his mother, Princess Diana, while comforting a girl whose father had passed away after a battle with cancer.

The Duke of Cambridge, 36, and his wife Kate Middleton, 34, spoke to a number of children and their parents at the Child Bereavement UK Centre in London’s Stratford, according to the MailOnline.

The service offers help and support to young people who have lost someone close to them and it is here that the royal met Aoife, nine, and her 12-year-old brother Keenan.

The siblings’ father John died from pancreatic cancer six years ago and William opened up about losing his parent almost 20 years ago.

He told Aoife: “Do you know what happened to me? You know I lost my mummy when I was very young too. I was 15 and my brother was 12.”

The royal attempted to get Aoife to open up about her father as he believes it helps to keep the memory of loved ones who have passed alive in people’s minds.

He said: “Do you speak about your daddy? It’s very important to talk about it. Very, very important.”

He added to her mother: “I think that for children it is sometimes difficult to understand that.”

Aoife’s mum was nearly brought to tears by William’s openness with her daughter and found their chat very moving.

She said: “I couldn’t believe it when he started to talk about his mother. It was very emotional and I was willing myself not to start to cry. I almost did.

“I am telling my children that if they take anything away from this day, it is what he said about how important it is to talk. Kids do not forget that. Sometimes it hurts but we can remember the happy things too. It is so important to talk.”
