Funny man Russell Howard opens up to Closer about being his mum’s best friend and being everyone’s unusual crush.

He’s one of TV’s best-loved comedians, but despite finding fame Russell Howard insists he’s still a mummy’s boy at heart.

Speaking to Closer, Russell, 36, says: “I’m really close to my mum, Ninette, she’s a legend and so funny. I know I’m in my thirties but I’m still a mummy’s boy, I take her out for lunch and dinner dates all the time!”

And the comic admits his mum is his number one fan too.

“My mum loves watching me perform. The first time I did Wembley she was pointing at her nethers and telling everyone, ‘That’s where the magic comes from.’ But no one knew she was my mum I think a lot of people assumed she was a mad lady who thought she had a magic vagina.

“She’s great, and doesn’t mind when I make fun of her during shows! Plus she's probably funnier than me, I hope she doesn't go into comedy because I'd be out of a job."

Despite often being cited as everyone’s unusual crush, Russell admits he doesn’t get a lot of attention from the ladies.

He admits: “I don’t understand being the ‘weird crush’, it’s flattering though! But I’ve always been the bloke in clubs going up to girls and shouting ‘HI HOW ARE YOU’ in ladies’ ears and getting no where.”

Even though he’s been unlucky in love in the past, Russell is in a relationship and says he loves staying in with his girlfriend and a tasty takeaway.

He adds: “I’m not very showbiz, my ideal night is at home on the sofa with my girlfriend and about 4 different meals from Deliveroo – they’ve changed my life, those magical people on bikes.”

Russell is now venturing into travel TV after signing up to travel round America with his mum on Comedy Central – the show will be aired in October and he promises lots of hilarious moments.

He says: “It’s going to be amazing! We’re spending time with UFO hunters, preppers, going to a high school prom, watching a pensioner beauty pageant, and going to Vegas to meet a man who talks to the dead! I can’t wait.”

Russell Howard's Stand Up Central is on Wednesdays at 10pm on Comedy Central UK.
