News has just broken that 007 actor Sir Roger Moore has died following a short battle with cancer

Legendary British actor, Sir Roger Moore, has passed away at the age of 89.

Announcing the sad news on Twitter, his family wrote: "With the heaviest of hearts, we must share the awful news that our father, Sir Roger Moore, passed away today. We are all devastated."

The tweet was accompanied by a full statement from his three children Deborah, Geoffrey and Christian, which read: "It is with a heavy heart that we must announce our loving father, Sir Roger Moore, has passed away today in Switzerland after a short but brave battle with cancer."

The emotional statement, continued: "The love with which he was surrounded in his final days was so great it cannot be qualified in words alone."

And concluded: 'Thank you Pops for being you, and for being so very special to so many people."

Sir Roger Moore was born in Stockwell, London, in 1945, and played James Bond in seven films.

Later in life became a UNICEF Ambassador - something he was very passionate about.

He was married three times - the first time at the age of just 18, and most recently to Kristina "Kiki" Tholstrup in 2002.
