Sophie Ellis-Bextor is the disco diva who juggles being mum-of-four with a pop career. We caught up with her to find out how she manages to stay cool, calm, collected and impossibly gorgeous at all times.

Despite being mum to four boys under 13, we don't think we've ever seen a picture of Sophie Ellis-Bextor looking anything but flawless.

The Murder on the Dancefloor singer – who’s nearly 6ft tall and a slender size 10 - says that always being on the go means she has to make sure she eats well, sleeps well and exercises well so that she can have enough energy to take the stage AND take the kids to school.

But while she has a healthy diet, Sophie says she loathes the gym, so making exercise fun and finding a balance is super important.

“When I was little, my mum didn’t believe in diets at all, so she just tried to get me into good, healthy habits more often than not.

“I love food and I believe in healthy eating - but I find spending hours in the gym really boring. So I go walking, I love dancing, taking the kids to the park, cooking my own food. All that sort of stuff that is probably a better choice overall but you’re not really thinking about it too much – you’re just busy having fun.

“I’m also raising four little boys so I’m trying to get them into healthy habits really. I give them lots of natural food, vegetables, fish, not too much processed stuff, not too much sugar. I just encourage them to make healthy choices.”

Super-busy Sophie – who’s mum to Sonny, 13, Kit, eight, Ray, five, and Jesse, one, with The Feeling bassist Richard Jones – has her Instagram littered with pictures of any of her adorable red-headed sons as well as snaps of her gracing the stage at the likes of Glastonbury and Wanderlust festivals.

But although she loves performing, Sophie admits that it’s incredibly difficult to be away from her family.

“When I’m on tour, one of the hardest things is being away from the children so FaceTime is brilliant to keep in touch. I can do bedtime with them, brush their teeth with them or read them a bedtime story.

“It sounds a bit silly, but those little things become really important when you’re away a lot. It just stops them thinking of you as absent and you’re part of their routine. So you haven’t gone away for as long as maybe feel that you have.”

But while the former Strictly finalist is all for technology when it comes to keeping in touch, the popstar says she’s nostalgic for the good old fashioned autograph – and that the selfie craze means there’s pressure to look good at all times.

“One thing I’ve noticed in this digital age is how many people now want selfies rather than autographs! I can’t remember the last time someone asked me for an autograph but selfies are the thing. I enjoy taking pictures all the time but sometimes when you’re out and about means you always feel like you’ve got to look a little bit more decent than you’re used to! You don’t really want people to take a picture of you if you’re not in the right mood for it!”
