The singer, who shot to fame during the second series of The X Factor, insisted she’s staying positive despite her diagnosis.

She wrote: “I have joined the army of strong and determined women who are fighting breast cancer.

“I am keeping positive and remain thankful for the love and support of my family and friends.”

Brenda finished her inspirational post by adding: “Be thankful for all the struggles you go through, they make you stronger, wiser and humble. Don’t let it break you, let it make you #SelfBelief [sic].”

Brenda reached the semi-finals of Simon Cowell’s talent show in 2005, alongside eventual winner Shayne Ward.

Since her time on the show Brenda has become a West End star, landing parts in shows including Chicago.

She is currently taking part in a UK tour of Hairspray, playing Motormouth Maybelle.

Celebrity friends were quick to send their well-wishes following the sad announcement.

Lizzy Cundy wrote: “So sorry my lovely Brenda… You are strong and an amazing girl and we all love you and supporting you x [sic].”
