You might think that sex is just for the young, but research has found that women actually feel most sexually confident in the mid-30s

If you're a woman in your mid-30s we have some good news for you; you are currently in your sexual prime!

A study of 2,000 women aged 40 plus, found that 91 per cent felt most 'at ease sexually' between the ages of 35 - 44.

That's the good news.

Because the research - which was commissioned by Replens MD vaginal moisturiser - found that once women hit the menopause, their sexual confidence takes a real knock.

Three in ten of the women surveyed - who were all in their 40s and currently in relationships - admitted to not feeling confident about their sexual ability, while 30 per cent felt similarly about being naked in front of their partner.

Of the women surveyed, two thirds said they had been, or were currently going through, the menopause. And of that group, half said they had experienced a reduced sex drive, and thirty-nine per cent said they had suffered with vaginal dryness - which nearly half of women said made them ‘feel old’.

Talking about the findings of the research, menopause specialist nurse Kathy Abernethy said: “Although many women appear to suggest their sex life has never been better, many other women said quite the opposite. As the research shows, this can be attributed to a number of factors, but perhaps the menopause and its numerous symptoms have a significant impact.

“Half of those surveyed who have experienced vaginal dryness admit they are worried about it, but 80 per cent of sufferers have not sought advice because they think that it’s a natural part of getting older. But conditions like vaginal dryness can be very easily managed and treated."

Talking about why vaginal dryness occurs, Kathy explained: “During menopause, oestrogen levels drop causing the cells in the vaginal tissue to produce less of the natural moisture which leads to symptoms such as discomfort and pain, often noticed more during intimacy.

“Our research shows that growing older does not mean the end of sexual intimacy. Hopefully this will encourage women to speak to an expert if they are concerned about ongoing menopause symptoms to help find the best treatment available to them.”
