It’s something that soap fans have long been dreaming of; a crossover between our favourite soaps.
After all, it sort of makes sense that the characters of Emmerdale, Coronation Street and EastEnders all operate within the same universe.
And it seems as if fans aren’t alone in their dreams for a massive soap crossover.
Yup, it seems as if soap producers have been hankering to link them up as well!
According to Digital Spy, a recent storyline conference saw Emmerdale producer Iain MacLeod reveal that ITV bosses had wanted to write a crossover plot line.
He said: “I think such a plotline might feel a little bit outside what our viewers would accept.
“But there’s a mischievous part of me that also thinks it would be quite good fun.”
The rejected storyline involved an Emmerdale character being followed on a journey to Coronation Street.
And, shockingly, they would be found to be having an affair with none other than Gail Platt.
“Someone pitched the idea that we discover one of our characters is having an affair,” Iain told showbiz website Digital Spy.
“Then one day we follow them over the Pennines and they let themselves into a house on Coronation Street and we realise they’re leading a double life with Gail or somebody over the hills.”
Yikes! Is it bad that we really want to see that happen?
Tragically, the storyline was rejected, as they felt the soaps would work better if they remained separate from one another.
But we have our fingers crossed that, one day in the future, we’ll see one EastEnders character hop on a train and wind up in Weatherfield, or someone from the Dales pop into the Rover’s Return for a pint.
After all, it worked for Hollyoaks and Brookside - why couldn’t it work for Emmerdale, EastEnders and Coronation Street?
