Emmerdale fans have been singing the praises of the soap for tackling the uncomfortable issue of homophobia in prison. As we all know by now, Aaron Dingle has just started a 12-month stretch at Her Majesty's pleasure, meaning he's away from his new husband, Robert Sugden. Poor Aaron was faced with the dilemma of being open about the fact he's gay, or keep it hidden. He was warned by a guard that he'd find life tougher if he was honest.

Viewers then saw the fan favourite sadly take off his wedding ring. Sob. It wasn't long before Aaron saw how gay prisoners were treated by other inmates. He was horrified to see the jail's 'top dog' make a stream of homophobic comments to the visibly scared inmate.

Aaron almost gave his secret away when he jumped to his defence, but quickly claimed that he didn't want any trouble on his first day.

But will Aaron be able to keep up the pretence when Robert comes to visit him next week? Or are things about to get a whole lot darker for him?
