The National Television Awards are coming around again for 2018 - here are 22 facts you didn't know about the ceremony...

If you're anything like us, one of the first things you'll have marked off on your calendar along with birthdays is the National Television Awards.

We are SUPER excited for this year's NTAs, which are taking place at London's O2 Arena on Tuesday 23rd January 2018, and will be broadcast live on ITV from 7.30pm - we'll see you on the sofa!

The one and only Dermot O'Leary will be presenting for the eighth year in a row, and this year he'll be joined by Love Island stars Kem Cetinay and Chris Hughes, who will be running the NOW TV Red Carpet Twitter Live backstage from 6.30pm.

Yep, it's gonna be a good'un!

So, to get us all in the NTA mood, we've gathered some very interesting facts for you to geek out on.

Here are 22 things you need to know about the National Television Awards...

1) Ant and Dec have won Most Popular Entertainment Presenter award at the NTAs every year since 2001

Michael Barrymore owned this award, winning it every year from the awards' conception in 1995 to 2001 when our favourite Geordie duo took over the crown - and they've won it every year since then.

2) The winners of the NTAs Most Popular Newcomer award have only ever been from either Emmerdale, Coronation Street or Eastenders

Despite competition from the likes of Hollyoaks, Casualty and Heartbeat (before it ended in 2010), only actors from Corrie, 'Enders and Emmerdale have won this award. Emmerdale has only won it twice, but Corrie has won it eight times with Eastenders winning with 11.

3) The red carpet at last year's National Television Awards was longer than Nelson's Column in London's Trafalgar Square

Yep, you read that right. The red carpet at the NTAs in 2017 was 63.5m, and Nelson's Column is 52m. It's also nearly as long as the wingspan of a Boeing 747, which is 60m. Wowza!

4) Nearly 700 stars walked the red carpet at the 2017 NTAs

Fun fact: that's the same amount of people that claimed to be half-siblings of Prince when he died in 2016. True story.

5) Guests arrives at the NTAs 2017 via 390 executive cars and 16 flights

6) The 2017 National Television Awards' stage was lit by half a MILLION different lights and LEDs

We DREAD to think what the electricty bill was for that!

7) The lights at the NTAs were held up by 48 tonnes of rigging

To put this into perspective, that's the weight of 17 adult giraffes.

8) Guests at the 2017 NTAs after party were served 64,080 glasses of Champagne Collet

They were also be served 72,000 glasses of Echo Falls wines. We can't think of anything better, to be honest!

9) The National Television Award for Best Serial Drama has only ever been won by Coronation Street and Eastenders...

...Apart from last year, when dark horses Emmerdale pipped everyone to the post, and took home the award!

10) The 2010 NTAs were the first primetime TV event to be broadcast live from the O2 arena

The National Television Awards have always been a bit of a trendsetter, you see.

11) The first ever National Television Awards took place in 1995

The inaugaral National Television Awards were broadcast from the Wembley Arena and hosted by Eamonn Holmes, which drew a television audience of 14m.

12) The only year there wasn't an NTA show was 2009

The NTAs were hosted at the Royal Albert Hall from 1996 to 2008, when it moved to the O2 Arena in 2010.

13) Trevor MacDonald is the longest-serving NTAs host

The first awards were presented by Eamonn Holmes, but Trevor MacDonald took over in 1996, and hosted until 2008. Dermot O'Leary then took over in 2010.

14) Sam Aston, who plays Chesney in Corrie, became the youngest ever winner of a National Television Award

Little Sam the cutie won the award for Best Newcomer in 2004 aged 11. He retains his title to this day.

15) There are TWO stages to the NTA nomination process

A longlist of nominees is drawn up featuring the most watched shows and their stars from each channel, based on BARB ratings. This is published in September, and the shortlist of the leading contenders in each category is published in January.

16) Michael Barrymore used the NTAs as a platform to announce he was gay

Michael bravely revealed he was gay at the awards in 1996 when accepting the award for Most Popular Entertainment Presenter.

17) The list of categories at the National Television Awards changes almost every year

The first year had 14 different award categories, two years ago there were 17 and this year there are 15 - but they're not all the same...

18) Over 4,000 stars have attended the NTAs over the years

Since the very first show in 1995, more than 4,000 stars from television shows have attended the awards.

19) The longest standing ovation at a NTAs show was two minutes 24 seconds

This occurred in 2001, and was for the New York Fire Chiefs. The awards took place only five weeks after the 9/11 attacks.

20) Soldier Soldier won the first ever NTA

Starring Robson Green and Jerome Flynn, the ITV programme won Most Popular Drama Series in 1995. It also kick-started Robson and Jerome's musical career, as they performed their cover of the hit Unchained Melody in one of the episodes.

21) EastEnders has collected the most National Television Awards

The BBC soap has a total of 28 wins, including 10 for Most Popular Serial Drama.

22) Kermit the Frog once presented an NTA award

Dermot O'Leary was up for Most Popular Entertainment Presenter in 2012, so 'Kermot O'Leary' stepped in to present the award!
