Laura Whitmore has dropped out of tonight’s Strictly Come Dancing.

The television presenter sustained an ankle injury earlier this week but announced late on Saturday that she would not be taking part in the live show.

A spokesperson for the BBC programme said: "Laura Whitmore will not perform on tonight’s Strictly Come Dancing due to an ankle injury sustained earlier in the week.

"She has been checked by a doctor and the medical team on site and they have advised she rest her ankle and does not dance this weekend.

"As per the rules of Strictly Come Dancing - because Laura and Giovanni cannot dance on tonight’s show - they will receive a bye through to next week and the show will continue with a public vote as per usual.

"We wish Laura a very speedy recovery."

The news comes after it emerged a number of the professional Strictly dancers were struck down with a mystery illness which reportedly nearly threw this weekend into chaos.

Twinkle-toed pro Brendan Cole also announced he would not be taking part this weekend, leaving his celebrity partner, singer Anastacia, to perform with Gorka Marquez.

Brendan has been ordered to rest after suffering a nasty lung infection.

News of his illness first emerged last weekend when he rushed to hospital for treatment after experiencing breathing difficulties.
