Six-year-old Bradley Lowery has died after a long but courageous battle with neuroblastoma, a rare cancer

Bradley Lowery has passed away "peacefully" in the arms of his devastated parents.

The six-year-old won over the entire country after being a guest of honour at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards last year, and became fast friends with international football player Jermaine Defoe.

Bradley's mum, Gemma, updated their Facebook page to announce the upsetting news that Bradley had died 1.35pm this afternoon.

She wrote: "My brave boy has went with the angels today, in mammy and daddies arms surrounded by his family.

"He was our little superhero and put the biggest fight up but he was needed elsewhere.

"There are no words to describe how heartbroken we are. Thank you everyone for all your support and kind words. Sleep tight baby boy and fly high with them angels."

The news has devastated fans of the little boy, who took to social media to pay tribute to the little lad.

One person wrote: "I'm honestly so so upset about hearing of Bradley's passing. In the short time I have followed his story I have been so humbled and inspired by your son.

"I wish he could have been here for a while longer and live. I'm sure he has helped so many people with his charity campaign and long may it continue. Rest in Peace Bradley."

Another commented: "So so sorry to read this, can't even imagine what you are going through right now but I'd just like to say what a beautiful boy Bradley was, how inspirational with everything he was going through to still be such a happy, energetic beautiful boy."

One person added: "Totally devastating. No-one should have to go through what this most awesome little boy and his family have. A six-year-old so immensely brave until the very end. And always with love to give and that beautiful smile on his face. Just Incredible.

"As was the strength and courage of his family. Deserved a miracle, not this cruel wicked outcome. Heart well and truly broken. The world has been robbed of a beautiful soul. Fly high my little hero. Smile on."

One wrote: "Fly high beautiful boy, you've shown this world what true love is all about, may you Rest In Peace in the knowledge you brought happiness to millions with your gorgeous little smile. Thinking of your mummy, daddy and all of your family at this very sad time. You're our hero, lots of love to you and your family."

Our thoughts are with Bradley's family at this sad time. 💔
