After extending the search for Madeleine McCann, it has now been reported that one of the gang members worked for the holiday resort where she was abducted in 2007.

According to The Sun, the police believe that the man who drove a tourist bus for the Mark Warner resort was working with a 16 year old and two other men.

After the man was arrested, it was discovered that he had been previously convicted for theft and the younger male later told police that he was involved with the gang because he was desperate for cash to buy a sports car.

Mobile phone calls between the men on the night in question place them at the scene, raising suspicion about what they were doing there.

Earlier this week, Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe belived that there was “one final lead” in the Maddy McCann case, and The Sun believes that this enquiry is that lead.

An officer has told the paper: “It has dogged the investigation all the way through and it's happening again.

“If we can't question the three suspects again the trail goes cold and the case will be shelved.”

The Portuguese police arrested the men on the request of the British police, however they have been released.

When previously interviewed, the men in question admitted to petty theft from the apartments where the McCanns were staying, but denied any involvement with Madeleine’s disappearance.

A witness apparently saw two of the men rowing on a balcony near to the complex, but denied seeing a little girl who had gone missing.

They apparently then started to whisper and disappeared from view.

In the two weeks before the McCanns arrived, two holiday apartments in the same block were also broken into, and the woman who lived above the flat the McCanns stayed in also underwent an attempted break in.

The suspects are Jose Carlos da Silva, 30, Ricardo Rodrigues, 24, and Paulo Robeiro, 53.

A spokesman for Scotland Yard has said: "There is no comment while there is an on-going investigation."
