After the traumatic experience, one parent has taken to Reddit to see if other parents had the same thing happen to them, and to warn people out there of the possible dangers of light up shoes that our kids love so much.
The Reddit user, JovianFlower, posted yesterday a thread, ‘My son’s light-up shoes started a fire in my car,’ and explained the following:
“When we went out to our car this morning, we saw that a fire had happened inside. It pretty much burnt the floor in the back seat and the back of the passenger seat and the back bench seat.
“We came to the conclusion (along with the fire marshall) that it was my son's light-up shoes that started the fire.
“They were completely burnt and charred up with the wires from the lights sticking out."
Naturally shocked by what had happened, the Reddit user asked if anyone else had ever experienced a similar situation.
While no one seemed to, most fellow parent shared the shock and concern over what had happened, horrified at the danger these fun kids accessories had caused.
One wrote:
“Wowza! Imagine if this happened when they were being worn!!”
“My son has Batman ones from Walmart and when I first looked at the shoes and noticed that it made me a bit uneasy. Now I wanna throw them away just because. He's gonna be devastated. Dammit.”
“My gosh, I hate to say that you were lucky but isn't it good it was only the car and not your house?”
“Jesus Christ, I thought this was a bullsh!t post until I saw the pictures. That's unreal! I thought kids blinky shoes were just little LEDs with a little watch battery inside them. I'd really love an update if anything comes of this.”
“That's insanity. I'm glad your little guy wasn't wearing the shows when they ignited.”
The Reddit user confirmed that they undergone an official fire evaluation, which did put the childrens’ shoes as the cause of the fire.
And while most of the comments came from other concerned parents, some people focused on the extremely rare, one-off nature of the incident, telling users not to overreact.
To the backlash of the ‘scaremongering’ nature of the thread, the original poster said:
“I posted this because I wanted to know if anyone else has heard of this happening.
“In any case, having lithium batteries in my kids shoes seems utterly pointless and just to avoid anything like this in the future, I am not going to be purchasing light-up shoes any more.
“I don't want to cause panic, but at the same time, I would hate for this to happen again in worse circumstances.
