One in three women will be the victim of physical or sexual abuse in their lifetimes.
Now a new video from Care Norway is calling on all fathers and fathers-to-be to step up their role in protecting women.
In it, we watch as a delighted husband drives his wife to hospital, where she will give birth to a baby girl.
But, as their journey begins, a young girl’s voice is heard from inside the car; the voice of the man’s unborn daughter.
And she has a powerful message for her father:
"I will be born a girl, which means that by the time I am 14 the boys in my class will have called me a whore, a bitch, a c*** and many other things.
"... by the time I am 16 a couple of the boys will have snuck their hands down my pants while I'm so drunk, I can't even stand straight. And although I say no they just laugh. It's funny right?
"No wonder I'm raped when I'm 21."
She then goes on to explain that the person who raped her who was raised by a man who told sexist jokes as a child - and how even her eventual husband-to-be, a "nice boy" with a good job, will subject her to domestic violence.
It’s not an easy video to watch… but it has an important message at the heart of it: we need to intervene and stop this culture of violence and rape against women sooner rather than later.
And that all begins with encouraging little boys to respect their female classmates.
"I know you will protect me from lions, tigers, guns, cars and even sushi without even thinking about the danger to your own life," the daughter says.
"But, Dear Daddy, I will be born a girl.
“Please do everything you can so that won't stay the greatest danger of all."
