The first poster and teaser clips from the hotly anticipated Tomb Raider reboot have just been released, showing Oscar winner Alicia Vikander in full action heroine mode as Lara Croft

The poster in question shows Alicia wearing a version of Croft’s iconic vest and cargo pants costume, while brandishing a particularly dangerous looking piece of kit and looking pensive against a stormy backdrop – though Twitter commentators have been quick to point out that there is something a little… off about the positioning of the actress’s neck in the photo. We’ll leave you to come to your own conclusions on that one…

Fans have also been treated to a short teaser trailer that gives us a first glimpse at the Swedish actress in action, playing the video game heroine we know and love as a twenty-something. Although it’s brief – lasting around 15 seconds – there’s certainly enough to have us feeling pretty excited ahead of the film’s planned March 2018 release date.

The film is (like so many recent action reboots) set to be an origins tale that will begin seven years after the disappearance of Lara’s father, an eccentric adventurer played by Dominic West. The 21-year-old Lara has chosen to work as a bike courier in East London, rather than taking on her family’s business empire, but eventually is – minor spoiler alert – driven to leave the streets of Shoreditch behind to trace his last steps, arriving at a fabled tomb off the coast of Japan. It’s this adventure that could earn her the name ‘Tomb Raider.’

Vikander is following in the footsteps of Angelina Jolie, who played the archaeologist-slash-action heroine in the first film adaptation of the iconic computer game, and in the 2003 sequel, The Cradle of Life.

Speaking earlier this year, Alicia told Vanity Fair that she sees Lara as ‘a model for many young women. She’s trying to carve out her place in the world and connect her future with her past.’

'She also has a fantastic mix of traits—tough, smart, vulnerable, plus she’s kick ass! She is also uniquely different to other characters I have taken on previously,' she added. According to the actress, the film will also pass the Bechdel Test, unlike many other action blockbusters before it.

‘I did 18 films and never got to act with another woman,’ she told The Sunday Times. ‘Lara Croft: Tomb Raider actually has relationships and stories. It actually passes the [Bechdel] test.’

She went on to promise that her take on Lara Croft will be a well-rounded character, explaining ‘I’ve read a lot of scripts and ideas of women in these big films just make me snore and go “Come on, aren’t we past this?”’
