Oscar-winning actress, Anne Hathaway, has been been announced as a global goodwill ambassador for UN Women – following in the same footsteps as Emma Watson and Nicole Kidman. Anne will be working alongside the United Nations to promote gender equality and empower women across the globe, with immediate effect.
The Hollywood figure - who gave birth to her first child with husband Adam Shulman last month - will use her new role to increase parental leave for new parents.
Sharing the news on her Instagram, Miss Hathaway said she was “excited to be appointed Global Goodwill Ambassador of@UNWomen” to “ensure that all genders are able to fully and equally participate in the world economy. I think we can all agree it's long past the time for action. unwomen.org."

UN Women’s executive director, Phumzile Mlambo-Nguck hailed the actress's new appointment. "This year UN Women is driving hard to foster more positive mind-sets and practical arrangements around workplaces that build and support equality for women," Phumzile said. "The motherhood penalty - which means that when they become mothers, women's pay and opportunities at work suffer - is a particularly insidious demonstration of gender inequality in the workplace. For too long it has been difficult or impossible to view raising a child as being truly an equal responsibility for both parents."
