Meryl Streep, Colin Firth And Emily Blunt Were Adorable On The Mary Poppins Returns Red Carpet

It was the Mary Poppins Returns premiere last night and not only were we treated to fabulous fashion choices by the cast but also adorable moments of genuine friendship among the large cast. Emily Blunt, Meryl Streep and Colin Firth were all laughs and jokes on the carpet last night, proving their on-set relationships transcend off-screen.

With Emily and Meryl working together on The Devil Wears Prada, their on-screen reunion has been heavily anticipated. But with Colin Firth also joining the cast, we were also treated to a Mamma Mia! reunion, and it seems that the co-stars all get along swimmingly. Just take a look at the pictures for yourselves...

Colin Firth has joined the cast of Mary Poppins Returns, a sequel to the classic Disney film, which will be released on Christmas Day in 2018.

The British actor, who has most recently reprised his role as Mark Darcy in Bridget Jones's Baby, will appear alongside Emily Blunt, who is taking on the role of the iconic nanny previously played by Julie Andrews.

Colin will reportedly play William Weatherall Wilkins of the Fidelity Fiduciary Bank, the employers of George Banks in the 1964 original. He will be joined by Lin-Manuel Miranda, the creator of Broadway hit Hamilton, who plays Jack, a street lamplighter, Ben Whishaw as a grown-up Michael Banks, and Meryl Streep in an as-yet-undisclosed role.

Set on Depression-era London, Mary Poppins Returns will tell the story of the now grown-up Jane and Michael Banks, and Michael's three children, who are visited by the nanny following a personal loss.

The film will be directed by Rob Marshall, who previously worked with Blunt on the 2014 adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim musical Into The Woods.

While fans of the 'supercalifragilisticexpialidocious' original will have a long time to wait to see how Blunt's take on the iconic character measures up to Julie Andrews' performance, in the mean time we're filling the gap by watching Emma Watson's Beauty and the Beast trailer on repeat...

Thanks to the latest announcement from the studio, Disney fans (and aren't we all Disney fans, really?) have plenty of cause for celebration.

After the success of live action re-imaginings of classic tales like last year's Cinderella, 2014's Maleficent (an origins story for Sleeping Beauty) and the recent Jungle Book re-make starring Lupita Nyong'o and Idris Elba, Disney have confirmed that nine new live action projects are in the works - seven of them being re-booted versions of classics that we know and love.

Emma Stone will star as the super-villainess of the title in Cruella, a 101 Dalmations spin-off, while Angelina Jolie and her impressive cheekbones will return for Maleficent 2, despite having previously expressed reluctance to reprise her role.

A sequel to Mary Poppins is also in the works, with Emily Blunt rumoured for the title role. While screen legend Julie Andrews will undoubtedly be a tough act to follow, if any can step up to the mark, it's Blunt, who received a Golden Globe nomination for her turn in the 2014 musical Into The Woods.

Reese Witherspoon has also been announced as the star of an as-yet-untitled Tinkerbell project - which is one of the most perfect casting choices we've heard all year.

No release dates have been confirmed for these projects yet, but Disney have revealed that a live action film will arrived in cinemas in July 2017 - most likely timed so as to avoid the much-anticipated Star Wars Episode VIII.

Before that, we have another live action re-boot to look forward to. Beauty and the Beast, due for release in March 2017, boasts an all-star cast, including Emma Watson as Belle, Emma Thompson as Mrs Potts, Downton's Dan Stevens as the Beast and Luke Evans as Gaston.
