A brand new trailer has dropped for the next installment of American Crime Story, the anthology series from American Horror Story and Feud creator Ryan Murphy, and as predicted, it looks set to be a lavish and gripping affair.

The Assassination of Gianni Versace will unpick the murder of Donatella Versace's brother Gianni, who was shot on the steps of his Miami Beach home in 1997 by Andrew Cunanan. It follows the widespread success of last year's *The People Vs OJ Simpson *and is set to air in the UK on BBC Two next year, though a broadcast date is yet to be confirmed.

In the latest trailer, we’re introduced to the show’s cast: Edgar Ramirez as Versace, Glee’s Darren Criss as Cunanan and Ricky Martin (yes, that Ricky Martin) as Versace’s partner, Antonio D’Amico. Most intriguing of all will be Oscar winner Penelope Cruz’s portrayal of Donatella Versace, platinum hair and all: this new clip shows the fashion legend delivering an impassioned response to her brother’s murder as she pledges to continue his legacy, saying: ‘Everything you see around us – this house, this company – was his life. I will not allow that man [Cunanan], that nobody, to kill my brother twice.’

Taking a real-life tragedy and transforming it into drama will always raise questions (and eyebrows), but according to the show’s creator, ‘when you’re doing a show like this, you’re not doing a documentary, you’re doing a docu-drama. There are certain things you take liberty with.’

Cunanan was a serial killer who is thought to have murdered at least five people over a three-month period in 1997, and many questions about the case remain unanswered. Murphy believes that entrenched homophobia in the police might explain why the murderer was not apprehended earlier. ‘This project is not about how or why Versace was killed, so much as “why it was allowed to happen,” Murphy noted at a TCA panel earlier this year. ‘[Versace] did not have to die.’

‘It’s an interesting thing to examine, particularly with the president now and the world we live in. I thought it was topical and social, which a show at its best is,’ he added.
