Forget her pale pink Prabal Gurung gown, following Sunday night’s Emmys, it was Elizabeth Moss’ custom-made Olgana Paris heels that got everyone talking.

Celebrity stylist Karla Welch revealed that The Handmaid’s Tale actress had a secret message to the patriarchy on the sole of her shoe. Welch shared a snap of the bottom of Moss’ stiletto which read ‘off’.

‘You'll have to guess what the other shoe says.... our note to the patriarchy #teamresistance,’ Welch wrote.

While this could be a reference to Moss’ character name in the dystopian drama, social media users suggested it was more likely to be a ‘f*** you’ to the patriarchy in Hollywood, and as a whole.

In the TV show based on Margaret Atwood’s prolific novel, Moss plays a slave (a handmaid) who is forced to bear children within a totalitarian regime. In the story Moss is given the name ‘Off’ as all of the handmaids are forced to take a name combining ‘Of’ which the name of their male custodian - in this instance, Offred.

In her acceptance speech for the Best Actress gong on Sunday, Moss spoke passionately about creating opportunities for women in film.

‘It's my bread and butter, it's what I'm most interested in as a woman, shows that are about women,’ she said.

Moss told the audience that there's ‘still a lot of work to be done’ in acheiving equality- something she has experienced first hand. ‘There are still meetings you walk into and you wonder if they say “no” because it's a show or film led by a woman,’ she added.
