George and Amal Clooney made a triumphant return to the red carpet at the Venice Film Festival premiere of Suburbicon last night, marking the power couple's first major public appearance since welcoming twins Ella and Alexander three months ago.

Taking their cues from the Old Hollywood playbook, the couple channelled old fashioned glamour, with George dressed smartly in a tuxedo and Amal wearing a lilac gown with a cinched in bodice and long, layered skirt by Versace, one of the lawyer and humanitarian's go-to red carpet designers. Accessories were kept understated, pairing the scene-stealing dress with silver sandals by Aquazzura.

In keeping with this modern-retro theme, her hair was loosely styled into a faux bob reminiscent of the screen stars of the 1940s, swept to the side to better showcase dramatic pearl drop earrings. And who better to be on hand for make-up duties than the impeccably glamorous Charlotte Tilbury, who helped Amal prep for her red carpet comeback with products from her new Hollywood collection?

Having divided their time between Berkshire and their Lake Como holiday home since the arrival of the twins back in June, the couple returned to the spotlight in support of Suburbicon, George's latest directorial effort. The film, a 50s-set satire of small-minded small town values, stars Julianne Moore, Oscar Isaac and his long-term friend and co-star Matt Damon.

As has become something of a Clooney tradition (remember the photos of the couple arriving in the city ahead of their wedding, along with Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber?), George arrived in the city by speedboat earlier in the week, accompanied by Moore.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight ahead of the premiere, the actor revealed how the newborns already seem to have developed distinct personalities. 'They start out with a personality right off the bat,' he explained. '[Alexander] is a thug already,' he joked to Matt Damon, adding 'He's a moose! Literally, he just sits and he eats!'

His co-star added that the baby 'looks like he could bounce right now, some place in Hollywood,' with George agreeing: 'Like checking IDs on the way into the nursery.' Ella, meanwhile, is 'very elegant, and all eyes. She looks like Amal, thank god.'

Explaining his and Amal's decision to opt out of the Hollywood tradition for out-there baby names, George said '[we] just didn't want to have really dumb names. We figured these kids are going to be looked at a lot and watched and [have their] every move sort of judged, and we wanted them to at least have a break with the names.'

'So we looked for some sort of normal names. We didn't have any great inspiration. It wasn't Alexander the Great and Ella Fitzgerald,' he added.
