The personal belongings and film set souvenirs of iconic Hollywood star Vivien Leigh are to be auctioned by Sotheby's in September - including the actress's Gone with the Wind script.

The collection donated by Leigh's family includes a gold ring gifted to her by husband Laurence Olivier, inscribed with 'Laurence Olivier Vivien Eternally', as well as a diamond broch in the shape of a bow, believed to be worth between £25,000-35,000.

Other items include her copy of Gone with the Wind, given to her by author Margaret Mitchell, and the wig she wore to play blonde Southern Belle Blanche DuBois in A Streetcar Named Desire.

'This is our chance to discover the real, and unexpected, Vivien Leigh,' explained Sotheby's Harry Dalmeny. 'We're all guilty of confusing our favorite actresses with the heroines they portray, of blurring Vivien's identity with that of Scarlet O'Hara or Blanche DuBois. But, behind the guise of the most glamorous and talked-about woman of her age we find a fine art collector, patron, even a book worm, who was the intellectual equal of the literati, artists and aesthetes she counted among her coterie. Her private collection does not disappoint.'

A previous auction of Gone with the Wind costumes in 2015 saw $137,000 raised for one dress worn by the star.

Leigh was one of the most fascinating and noteworthy stars of 1940s and 1950s Hollywood, winning two Oscars for her most famous roles in Gone with the Wind and A Streetcar Named Desire. She was a complete unknown when she defied the odds to secure the most coveted role of the day as Scarlett O'Hara, despite being British when the role required a Southern American.

Outside of the cinema, Leigh was married to fellow actor Laurence Olivier, with whom she shared a tempestuous relationship. She had a reputation for being difficult on set, and often suffered from bouts of tuberculosis - which eventually took her life in 1967 aged just 53. She remains one of the most enduring celebrities of the Golden Age of Hollywood and was named 16th on the American Film Institutes list of greatest female movie stars.

The auction will take place on 26 September at Soethby's in London. They will be on display from today until 11 August.
