This year marks the ninth anniversary of Heath Ledger’s untimely death. And in celebration of his life, Spike TV has announced a documentary entitled ‘I Am: Heath Ledger’.
The programme, set to air in May 2017, will reflect on Heath's acting career from his breakthrough role in 10 Things I Hate About You to his Oscar-nominated performance in 2005 classic, Brokeback Mountain.
The actor starred alongside Jake Gyllenhaal in 'Brokeback Mountain'
The documentary will be told by those closest to the Australian actor, as it also promises to focus on Heath’s relationships with friends and family. Most notably, the programme will reflect on Heath’s three-year relationship with Michelle Williams.
The actress recently spoke candidly about living with Heath and how she struggled to cope with the loss and prospect of bringing their daughter Matilda up as a single parent.
Heath and Michelle were together for three years
The documentary will of course also investigate Heath’s death. The actor was famously in the middle of filming The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus when he passed away at the tender age of 28.
According to the New York City medical examiner’s office, the actor died from an accidental overdose of sleeping pills, anti-anxiety medication and painkillers. The untimely death was not caused by a sudden binge however, as the build-up of drugs in Heath’s system led to the fatal incident.
Previous subjects who have been featured in the 'I Am' series by Spike TV include Bruce Lee and JFK Junior.
