It looks like Hugh Grant’s fictional Prime Minister is back to save the nation in our hour of need. The actor has been pictured reprising his infamous Love Actually role for the forthcoming Comic Relief sequel, along with on-screen love interest Martine McCutcheon.
Screenwriter Emma Freud, the partner of Love Actually director Richard Curtis, took to Twitter to shares behind the scenes images of Hugh in Prime Ministerial capacity, taking questions at a press conference in a nod to one of the most famous scenes from the original film.
‘And here he is. Our Prime Minister. Again,’ she captioned the photo, which leaves us with plenty of questions. Why is Hugh’s arm in a sling? And has he really been PM of the United Kingdom for 14 whole years? Or was he ousted and then brought back? Will he trigger Article 50?
The biggest question of all, though, is whether he is still in love (actually) with Natalie, as played by Martine McCutcheon? Happily, it is one that has already been answered by Freud and Curtis.
‘Our PM is still married. And she’s still lovely,’ Freud captioned a shot of Martine on a monitor screen, appearing in the crowd of the press conference scene. Sighs of relief all round, then: what with the absence of Alan Rickman and Emma Thompson (she said it would be ‘too sad’ to reprise her character without her last cast mate) we’re not sure we could have dealt with a divorced David and Natalie.
Another Twitter post saw Richard Curtis posing with Grant and McCutcheon, captioned: ‘The PM, his wife and the writer who never worked out a good camera face.’
The press conference crowd was made up of real-life journalists (guessing our invite got lost in the post, guys?), along with YouTube stars like Alfie Deyes and Niomi Smart and some Red Nose Day competition winners.
The 10-minute sequel will also see Colin Firth, Liam Neeson, Keira Knightley, Bill Nighy, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Andrew Lincoln, Rowan Atkinson, Lucia Moniz and Olivia Olson reprising their roles from the 2003 film.
Red Nose Day Actually will air on 24th March on BBC One as part of Comic Relief.
