Melania Trump will soon set off on her first solo trip abroad as First Lady of the United States.

She will lead the US delegation to this year's Invictus Games - the Paralympic-style sporting games that allows thousands of men and women who have been injured and wounded in combat to participate in sporting events including swimming, cycling, wheelchair basketball and wheelchair rugby.

The White House announced that Melania will attend the annual sporting event in Toronto from September 23-30, to support the competing American athletes. Upon arrival, she will meet with Prince Harry, who founded the Invictus Games in 2014 to raise global awareness of wounded war veterans. This year, men and women from 17 countries worldwide will take part in the games.

In the official statement issued by the White House, Melania Trump said: ‘I was heartened by the great success of the inaugural Invictus Games that took place in London in 2014, and the second games in Orlando, Florida last year.

‘In just two short years, the Invictus Games have allowed thousands of injured and wounded servicemen and women from many different countries to participate in adaptive sports competitions – something that should be lauded and supported worldwide. I am honoured by the opportunity to represent our country at this year’s games.’

Melania has accompanied Trump across on numerous trips this year, but earlier this month she was unable to join G20 events due to violent protests in Hamburg causing her to stay inside her hotel due to safety concerns. Perhaps without Trump by her side, Melania's trip to Canada will go more smoothly.

Interestingly, Michelle Obama didn't make her first solo trip at First Lady until 15 months into Barack Obama's presidency, so Melania's solo visit to Canada is early into her husband's administration by comparison.

Prince Harry’s girlfriend, Toronto-based Meghan Markle, is also expected to garner a lot of media attention at the upcoming games.
