On Tuesday evening, new documentary Diana: 7 Days That Shook The Windsors, aired on Channel 5. And the programme revealed heartbreaking details surrounding Princess Diana’s death in August 1997.

According to royal biographer Tina Brown, things returned to normal so soon afterwards, that Diana's son Prince Harry was unsure what happened.

In the documentary, Brown revealed: “Prince Harry actually asked his father 'is it true that mummy's dead?' The children could not understand why everything was as normal except for being told a couple of hours before their mother had died."

According to the documentary, the Royal Family’s reaction was to ‘do as they had always done’ in the wake of Diana's death, so they visited church the following day as usual. And at the service in Balmoral, no mention of Princess Diana’s death was made.

"The first thing we saw of the boys was when they were going to church for Sunday service and people were saying 'how could they, these boys have just lost their mother, and they're going to church?'", writer Ingrid Seward commented in the documentary.

But the Queen's concern for her grandchildren was also touched on in the programme. According to the Channel 5 documentary, Her Majesty asked for all televisions and radios to be hidden from the young princes to spare them from the details.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Princess Diana's death and in recent months, the brothers have spoken out about losing their mother at such a young age.

In a recent interview with GQ for instance, Prince William admitted: "I am in a better place about it than I have been for a long time, where I can talk about her more openly, talk about her more honestly, and I can remember her better, and publicly talk about her better."

He continued: "It has taken me almost twenty years to get to that stage."
