This year marks two decades since the tragic passing of Princess Diana. But there’s no denying that her sartorial legacy lives on.
The ‘people’s princess’ was renowned for breaking royal protocall as she donned '80s rollnecks, tartan power suits and the cold-shoulder dress (before any of us even knew what it was).
And now one of her most iconic jewellery pieces is to up for auction. Aptly named the ‘Swan Lake Necklace’, the princess donned the iconic accessory for a performance of Swan Lake at London's Royal Albert Hall in June, 1997.
The necklace was hand-crafted by former Crown Jeweler, Garrard, and consists of 178 diamonds and South Sea pearls. The princess was set to receive matching earrings from the designer too but the theatrical event marked one of her last public engagements before her tragic death in 1997, so she never donned the complete set.
Auctioneers at Guernsey’s are expecting to sell the iconic necklace for $12.1 million, according to US Weekly. The accessory currently belongs to a Ukrainian couple who originally purchased the jewels for $630,000.
What remains certain however, is that the touching nostalgia behind the royal necklace is undoubtedly priceless.
