Princess Diana Said The ‘Wrong Name’ During Her Wedding Vows

I mean, not the greatest start to a love story.

Given that the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer was held with a congregation of 3,500 people, watched by an estimated TV audience of 750 million people around the world and drew crowds of about 600,000 to the streets surrounding St. Paul’s Cathedral, it’s understandable that the couple in question suffered from pre-wedding jitters (and then some).

Apparently, these nerves manifested themselves in some errors at the altar, with Diana reported to have said the wrong name while saying her wedding vows.

Before you visualise an ‘I Ross, take thee Rachel’ moment, it seems that Diana’s mix-up was not quite as dramatic. As a BBC article detailing the day’s events puts it: ‘Wedding day nerves were apparent during the ceremony. Diana mixed up the Prince’s names, calling him Philip Charles Arthur George, rather than Charles Philip.’ With the abundance of middle names that each member of the royal family uses, it's hardly surprising that the soon-to-be Princess of Wales suffered a slip-up (it's surely a little like calling your teacher 'Mum', but having your mistake broadcast all around the world, rather than around your GCSE French class).

Prince Charles also made an error of his own, referring to 'thy goods' rather than 'my worldly goods' at another point in the vows.

Obviously, a few mixed up words were the least of their worries. Prince Charles was, even then, in love with Camilla Parker Bowles. And let's not forget that Diana was only 19 at the time, and having the world's eyes upon her would have been hugely pressuring.

Will this be shown in the next series of The Crown? We'll know very soon.
