As part of a round table discussion for Net A Porter’s EDIT magazine, actresses Cynthia Nixon, Tracee Ellis Ross, Kristen Bell and Michelle Monaghan spoke about careers, feminism and the gender pay gap.

However, for any devoted SATC fans, the most interesting takeaway was what Nixon revealed about the much-loved show. Nixon told EDIT that the storylines of Miranda, Carrie, Samantha and Charlotte were actually based on real life events.

"Every plot-line that happened literally happened to someone in the writer's room, or happened to someone they directly knew. So even though some of them were fantastical and absurd, it was based on a real thing,” Nixon said.

Yep, every single one. From Samantha’s horrific chemical peel to the time Carrie got stood up by her friends on her birthday, the hilarious, awkward and sometimes tear jerking moments that made up the show, were all based on reality.

"And that's the thing, you can dress it up but if it's got the core of truth, people are excited to see it because they recognise it. It feels authentic," Nixon continued.

The actress also spoke about how the nineties show changed how we viewed women on TV. "In the case of Sex and the City, it was that actually women weren't sitting around pining to get married and that was the be all and end all of their existence," Cynthia said.

"Now, Sex and the City didn't create that, that was what was happening. But we showed it and all of a sudden, people flocked to it because they were like, 'Yes!'"
