When Theresa May visited the White House to meet newly-elected Donald Trump, the President grasped her hand and simultaneously sent the Internet into hysteria.
The untimely intimate moment captured between Trump and May caused controversy in Britain in the midst of Brexit and the Women’s March against Trump's alleged misogynistic demeanor.
And now the Prime Minister has spoken out for the first time about the incident.
In a new interview with American Vogue, interviewer Gaby Wood quizzed Theresa on the matter. In response, the Prime Minister simply laughed and replied: “I think he was actually being a gentleman. We were about to walk down a ramp, and he said it might be a bit awkward.”
She then went on to reveal that she enjoyed meeting Trump as she admitted, “I like to think we got on. I mean, obviously he has, uh . . . it was a stunning election victory, in that he’s someone who has not been involved in politics."
Pushed on the topic of Trump’s misogyny towards women, Theresa replied: "Well, I don't... We don't comment on private conversations that take place. All I would say is, I've been very clear: I'm not afraid to raise issues and the nature of the relationship is such that we should be able to be frank and open with each other."
The interview will be featured in the April issue of US Vogue alongside images by legendary photographer Annie Leibovitz.
The photographs depict the Prime Minister in her Chequers country residence. Theresa wears a navy blue LK Bennett coat and dress in the newly-released images and her husband Philip also features in the editorial.
Theresa is the first Prime Minister in history to grace the pages of American Vogue.
