Last night’s 2015 SAG Awards in Los Angeles were yet another safe and stylish warm up for the big one that’s to come. The Oscars are around the corner and the A-listers and their stylists are starting to define a few of the red carpet season’s top-line trends. The most likely contender suchs as Emma Stone and Felicity Jones continue to up the ante with unexpected choices, Julianne Moore is more than an established beacon of fashionable hope – the flame haired award winner literally never puts a foot wrong. Then there are some unusual new trail blazers - Jennifer Aniston is blazing a radically different path which doesn’t include a single LBD – and then flashing more flesh than we’ve ever seen her do before.

So what was the sum of last night’s most popular looks? Here are four trends we’ve decoded from the do…

SCULPTURAL BLACKS

[Rex]

There’s nothing boring about this line up of black dresses. With contrast fabric trails (like Emma’s chiffon skirt under a black tux mini from Dior), blown-out proportions (see Lorilei Linklater’s sleeves) or graphic asymmetric lines (check out Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner) these frocks may be dark but they’re also mysterious.

DEEP V = V GOOD

[Rex]

Whether in a trouser suit or this vintage Galliano gown, Jen An’s top way to conceal/reveal is via a plunging V neckline, complete with lead-the-eye body jewellery. She’s not the only one exposing some décolletage: Lupita Nyong’o in Elie Saab, Rashida Jones in Emanuel Ungaro, Julia Roberts in Givenchy and Maggie Gyllenhaal in Thakoon.

EMERALD GEMS

[Rex]

Both Julianne Moore (in Givenchy) and Claire Danes (in Marc Jacobs) were two of the very best dressed at the Sag Awards 2015 – was it down to their colour choice? Both opted for sumptuous green gowns that stood out from the red carpet and complemented their delicate skin tones. This shade of emerald can look mumsy, but simple cuts and modern embellishment came to the rescue.

SHOULDER SHAKERS

[Rex]

Two off-the-shoulder gowns came from one design house – Balenciaga. Felicity Jones AND Naomi Watts have followed Sienna Miller’s lead in elegant off-shoulder styles from Alexander Wang’s collection for the French brand. If you’ve got a clavicle to show off, then Wang’s your man. Emilia Clarke looked equally gorgeous in a Donna Karan.
