Dissecting Gigi Hadid’s Unbeatable Style

Gigi Hadid is a supermodel not just by occupation but also by nature, if her style is anything to go by. She has seemingly been well dressed all of her life – good style seems to run in her genes, as does having a model physique – and what makes her style so on point is that it’s very true to her. Whereas her little sister Bella is better known for her more ‘out-there’ outfits, Gigi’s get-up is less fancy but oh-so cool, and she works it like no other. We break down the formula of Gigi’s style and look back at her best ever looks.

Street Style

A California girl at heart and of residence, Gigi’s style embodies the typical, dreamy Californian lifestyle: relaxed, understated, best in the sunshine but always with a glimmer of Hollywood glamour.

When off-duty, Gigi is at her best. Sunglasses (round and cat-eye look best on her) and blue jeans are the two staple pieces she is rarely seen not wearing. Her long legs mean she can wear jeans in a variety of shapes and styles, especially mom jeans, straight leg jeans and bootleg jeans.

When out and about, her overall look is made more casual with small, often cropped, tops, oversized jackets, flat shoes and with her hair pulled back off her face into a ponytail or swept over to the side.

She is the master of the simple 3-piece look: baggy jeans, a small top or small hoodie with a flashy jacket and you’re good to go. Accessory-wise she keeps it simple – a small shoulder bag or clutch will do, and she doesn’t wear a lot in a way of jewellery either - a necklace, perhaps, but her golden tan will do most of the talking. Again, this is the Cali vibe coming through; she dresses as if she could drop everything and get on a surfboard at any given time. She could even be wearing a bikini underneath her outfit, that’s how casual-chic her get-up is.

Fancy

Her street style is where she’s most comfortable as it’s the theme she projects day-to-day, but when she has a fancier event to attend, i.e. fashion week or a party, she unleashes her sartorial nous and ups the ante.

If she’s not wearing jeans, she’s goes for tailored trousers, paired with a top that will determine the degree of ‘dressed up’ the event in question demands. (Tip: you can never go wrong with a plain white t-shirt, ever.) Gigi rarely rocks heeled shoes, because at 5’ 10’’ she doesn’t need extra inches, but when she does she sticks to skinny, strappy heels which lengthen her legs. Not forgetting to mention that whatever the occasion, the sunnies are always in hand, naturally.

Athleisure

No one wears athleisure better than Gigi, simply because it suits her lifestyle and personality down to a tee. Her slender, long body means she can wear bulkier sweats which are boxier in shape, and they’ll still look flattering on her.

She doesn’t try anything fancy when it comes to gym wear – long leggings and a sports bra will do, and always a sprinkling of brand love for that Hollywood touch.

Red Carpet

Gigi has been dressed by every top designer in the industry, but not just on the catwalk, but for award shows and A-list parties, too.

MTV VMAs; Vanity Fair Oscar Party; British Fashion Awards

At the MTV VMAs in 2015, Gigi wowed in a bright yellow bodysuit gown with plunging neckline by Emilia Wickstead, with her hair slicked back. She looked sensational in a silver jumpsuit at the British Fashion Awards in 2016, and at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party in 2015 she opted for a black cut-out, high-slit dress, both by Atelier Versace.

The AMAs 2016

She co-hosted at the AMAs last year, changing her outfit no less than six times. She walked the red carpet wearing white lace Roberto Cavalli gown, then changed into a Jessica Rabbit-esque red, one-shoulder gown by Atelier Versace, then onto an embellished two-piece ensemble and then a croc-style cut-out gown, both by Julien McDonald; a turtleneck gown by Nicolas Jebran and a glittery jumpsuit also by Atelier Versace (and, breathe).

Basically, everyone wants to dress Gigi (and everyone has), and she can look good in pretty much anything... Atta girl.
