This ‘80s Fashion Trend Gets The Balenciaga Treatment

Desperately Seeking Susan? Madonna? The Rubik's Cube? The 1980s was a pretty spectacular era - something the fashion world are firmly in agreement with.

Fluorescent-flavoured ensembles. Boxy blazer jackets. Dynasty-style cocktail dresses. It’s all coming back - thanks to Rodarte, Céline, DKNY et al.

But there’s one designer championing the extreme eighties revival more than anyone else RN: Demna Gvasalia at Balenciaga.

In the label’s latest SS17 campaign, styled by Lotta Volkova, the Georgian-born designer makes a case for full-on bright purple spandex.

Shot by the most in-demand photographer of the moment, Harley Weir, the ad shines the spotlight on the dodgy stretch fabric invented in 1958. Albeit a far more uber-glam and grown-up spin on spandex - no longer to be confined to just your workout wardrobe.

Of course, the rise of high-end sportswear was a hot talking point for AW16. See Vetements haute hoodies and velour tracksuits making their way back into people’s wardrobes (again).

And now - couture spandex?
