Jessica Chastain Defends Anne Hathaway Against Hate Comments

The cast of* Interstellar* have touched down in London for the European leg of their promo tour, attending a press conference this afternoon ahead of tonight's premiere. In between questions about space suits and saving the planet, someone brought up the Hathahaters.

When asked how it was for the cast to work with Anne Hathaway seeing as everybody hates her, Jessica Chastain swooped in to defend her co-star. "Anyone who says that is just a bully," Jessica said. "Anne Hathaway is SO nice. She's an intelligent, generous, beautiful person and I want to work with her again and again and again."

Anne was clearly touched by Jessica's comments, thanking her for her kind words. Her co-star Matthew McConaughey added: "This was the first time I worked with her - I thoroughly enjoyed it - she's a complete professional and takes a lot of courage with her acting."

The actress spoke last month about those 'why we hate Anne Hathaway' stories which circulated around awards season two years ago. "What are we supposed to do—pretend like it didn't happen?" she said. "People treated me a certain way. But I've grown from it. This whole thing has made me a way more compassionate and loving person. And I don't feel sorry for myself. I was in crisis. Now I'd be fine. I really would be. I'd let it roll off my back, but at the time I was still partly Fantine. I was still identifying with being a victim." You'd think an Oscar would secure plenty of roles, but Anne said: "I had directors say to me, 'I think you're great. You're perfect for this role, but I don't know how audiences will accept you because of all this stuff, this baggage."

At the press conference Anne also spoke about how she loved wearing the spacesuit when filming in Iceland, because every day felt like it was Halloween. But she said she had to "earn the right to wear it - it wasn't easy. I realised I wouldn't be able to slack off the gym and go 'woohoo I'm not wearing a catsuit for this one I can eat!' I did have to workout as hard just to be able to stand up in it." Matthew liked his space suit because it meant he could sweat when filming in the freezing Iceland: "You could line it with all your clothes and no one could see."

Matthew said of playing such an emotional part in* Interstellar*, "I was fortunate I had my family with me so I immediately came back to my kids - not a phone call, or 'see you in a few weeks.' He said of how becoming a father influenced his acting: "It restored my sense of wonder - I'm a logical guy - but kids think logic is a bunch of bologny. Their stories have no logic. They see something for the first time every day. I could go on and on about the things I've learnt from my kids."
