Ready yourselves for some new #lifegoals. Lauren Hutton at 73 is having yet another fashion moment – slaying in a recent LOVE magazine editorial in archive Vivienne Westwood and doing the double in Bottega Veneta’s S/S ’17 show and campaign. But her latest role is perhaps one of the most surprising yet.
The actress stars in one of a handful of short films shot by Sofia Coppola for Calvin Klein underwear, and we’re not kidding when we say she kills it. Conventional wisdom would say that septuagenarian Hutton is an unusual choice for an underwear ad – it’s a medium known for its pursuit of the unobtainable, after all. Far from the pneumatic sexbots of yore, Hutton – wrinkles and all – shows us that you don’t need to be flaw-free to be sexy.
And Hutton isn’t the only mature woman who’s captured the fashion world’s heart – Dame Viv herself took the role of model in her brand’s latest catwalk show, while the likes of Carolyn Murphy, 42, Amber Valletta, 43, and Guinevere Van Seenus, 39, added to the joy at Dries Van Noten’s 100th show. In London, young designers Simone Rocha and Gareth Pugh showed their appreciation for women of a certain age, their casting creating a powerful clap back against the invisibility many older women feel.
Away from the catwalk, Instagram stars such as Accidental Icon, Sophie Fontanel and Baddie Winkle are proof that there’s far more to mature fashion than elasticated-waist slacks and sensible shoes. And the best thing about these women? The fact that their style can’t be pigeon-holed. There’s been a real surge in individual style of late, spearheaded by a wave of thoughtful dressers and street- style stars. And the idea that a wear-what-you-want attitude applies to women of any age is inherently cheering for those of us who feel alienated by the seemingly endless supply of hot young It things.

But perhaps the most alluring aspect of these older women is that they’re undeniably comfortable in their own skin, oozing confidence in a way their Millennial counterparts just don’t. Girl crush? Pah! Make way for the woman crush.
