A bridal designer based in Hertfordshire is reportedly sueing British fashion house Alexander McQueen and its creative director Sarah Burton over the design of Kate Middleton's iconic wedding dress.
According to The Sunday Times, Christine Kendall has filed a claim against the British brand with the Intellectual Property Enterprise Court. The designer claims that she presented the Duchess of Cambridge with sketches of a dress in November 2010, prior to her wedding in April 2011.
'Our client is certain that her company's design was unfairly taken and copied,' Kendall's lawyers said, before adding that 'The claim is not against the Duchess and there is no allegation of wrongdoing against the palace.' A spokesperson for the Duchess revealed last weekend that she had never seen any such sketches.
Alexander McQueen have been quick to refute any such suggestions, responding to the claims in a statement. 'We are utterly baffled by this legal claim,' a spokesperson said.
'Christine Kendall first approached us at Alexander McQueen almost four years ago, when we were clear with her that any suggestion Sarah Burton's design of the royal wedding dress was copied from her designs was nonsense. Sarah Burton never saw any of Ms Kendall's designs or sketches and did not know of Ms Kendall before Ms Kendall got in touch with us — some 13 months after the wedding. We do not know why Ms Kendall has raised this again, but there are no ifs, buts or maybes here: this claim is ridiculous.'
