Skinny Jeans Could Be Harming Your Health (Yes, Really)

Don’t be a fashion victim…

It’s Sunday morning. Bleary eyed, you clamber around your bedroom deciding what to wear - something that will take very little effort but still appears ‘put together’ enough to meet your pals for brunch. A fail-safe outfit? A pair of your favourite skinny jeans, a comfy white tee and a hoodie (fashion kudos if it’s Vetements). With ‘athleisure’ and ‘back to basics’ key trends for spring/summer ’17, the low-key look is still reigning among the street style set. But what you've probably been unaware of this whole time is how these wardrobe staples could be seriously damaging your health, according to the experts.

BCA chiropractor Tim Hutchful told Sky News: ‘I am always surprised at how many of my patients are unaware that their clothing and accessories can affect their back health and their posture,’ adding ‘and equally how many decide their outfit-choice outweighs their pain.’

‘While overloaded and heavy handbags are a common culprit, some more unexpected items like skinny jeans can also wreak havoc,’ Hutchful warns. ‘They restrict free movement in areas such as the hips and knees, affecting the way we hold our bodies.’

So does this mark the death of the ‘skinny’ jean in 2017? Think of it more as an opportunity to 5:2 your wardrobe.

‘Moderation is best,’ Tim advices. ‘And there are easy ways you can reduce the impact on your posture and overall health.’

‘For example - try and limit the number of times you wear skinny jeans or high heels every week so you're giving your body a break.’

Done and done!
