Zara announced the launch of their debut sustainable collection entitled #JoinLife this week, despite endless copyright allegations being made against the Spanish retailer by independent artists.
Perhaps a bid to win back support following a protest to boycott the Inditex giant, the line is first of a kind for the company.
The autumn/winter '16 collection is made from recycled wool, Tencel (a wood fibre taken from sustainably managed forests) and organic cotton, with the promise to ‘respect the environment’, according to the Spanish retailer’s website.
The farming process used to extract the materials consumes 90 percent less water than conventional cotton too.
Yet despite the environmental ethos promised by the Inditex giant, we couldn’t help but wonder if the brand could end up sacrificing their sell-out designs.
But we were pleasantly surprised by the environmentally friendly line. The collection steeped in the brand's typically autumnal palette features crisp frilled sleeves, circle-belted blazers and earthy palazzo trousers (which are always too long).
Proof of our obsession with the new collection? We already have the boatneck-collared shirt and belted safari dress in our basket.
But with a similar price point to that of their usual offerings, we can’t help but feel our bank accounts cower in fright…
It may be a step in the right direction for the environment but not for our credit cards...
