There was one thing distracting us from the trends dominating the catwalks this season. And judging by the abundance of deconstructed oxford shirts and ruffles, it was undoubtedly an eye-catcher.

Pinched to the earlobes of models hung supersized clusters of jewels, silver plated hoops and chunky gemstone rocks – all responsible for stealing our gaze from the sartorial goings-on of the catwalk.

The new, weighty trend made an appearance at a multitude of shows, model’s ears glinting from the fluttering flashes of the audience’s iPhones.

Rodarte saw intricate ear chains draped across the necks of models whilst Proenza Schouler opted for mirrored horseshoe tiers of silver.

But it wasn’t just the catwalks sporting the mega trend, as bloggers and guests took to the streets to showcase their newly accessorised lobes. Adorned in everything from pompoms to chandelier-esque danglers, the street-style set showed that the bigger, the better this season.

So we round up the ways to don the supersized (slightly weighty) trend this season without feeling too overdressed…

The Ear Chain Re-Visited

Remember a couple of seasons ago when everyone was donning ear cuffs complete with strange designed-to-drape chains? Well, the trend has made a comeback and this time, it’s a little more extravagant.

Rodarte showcased its spring/summer ’17 show during New York Fashion Week and it was a whimsical affair with models donning flowers in their hair and Victoriana ruffled lace.

Though the enchanted, almost fairy tale feel, of the collection was juxtaposed against white strappy leather and you guessed it, chunky, gold-laden earlobes. Models donned asymmetrical earrings, one chandelier-esque, the other, a simple leaf-shaped stud.

Others showcased metallic ear cuffs adjoined by a chunky chain draped across the chin. How to adopt the look IRL? Pair with ripped jeans and a simple white t-shirt for a minimal twist on the trend.

Matching Pairs Are Out

As demonstrated by J.W. Anderson, matching earrings are no longer ‘in’. Sorry Claire’s. So continue this season’s obsession with juxtaposing accessories (just take a look at Céline’s mismatched shoes) and don not one but two different pairs of earrings.

So no need to worry if you’ve lost one half of your favourite pair, as you can get away with donning two at once. Why? Because J.W. Anderson says so.

Don Floral Crystals

Delpozo was undoubtedly the one show that single-handedly won us over with the whole mega earring phenomenon. Inspired by the work of Spanish Impressionist painter Joaquín Sorolla and contemporary sculptor Soo Sunny Park, the Swarovski-laden earrings undoubtedly stole the limelight.

Made up of 1,268 crystals in grand total, the sequinned works of art clung to the ears of models, who donned floral brocade prints and origami-style shirts. The ethereal creations may be a little too weighty for work but let them be a reminder that big earrings have made a comeback. And boy, are they delightful.

One Rock Wonder

Over to Tibi and it seems designer Amy Smilovic made a case for the solo piercing. Models decked in primary yellow and ballooned sleeves, walked the runway with not two but one earring each.

Gold, clustered rocks clung to the earlobes of the models, an eclectic nod to the supersized trend. So this season why not invest in one, truly chic earpiece? If anything, it’s sure to save the pennies.

Horseshoe Tiers

Proenza Schouler finished bold graphic prints and wide-set stripes with silver horseshoe-esque silver earrings.

Don the look this season with similar abstract danglers paired with a crisp Oxford shirt and trousers. A chic daytime office look transformed with a pair of supersized winners.

This look will bode well with a swept up pony or sleeked back do, so don’t be afraid to bare your face. Finish with minimal, dewy makeup.
