The Most Dazzling Celebrity Engagement Rings Of All Time

Having a diamond ring on your finger is always a little scary - what if it falls down the sink or gets stuck in a grate mid-commute? But in Hollywood, stars don't just wear a classic gold band with a single diamond. Nope. They proudly wear their very own version of the infamous Hope diamond on their wedding finger...

And thanks to the major price tag – and, you know, sentimental reasons, of course – some celebrity engagement rings warrant their own personal security guard. Who wins the award for the most blinding, ostentatious ring ever? Jennifer Aniston's diamond is anything but discrete and who could forget J.Lo's pink dazzler, presented by former fiancé Ben Affleck back in 2002 (side note: a jaw-dropping gemstone doesn’t necessarily equate to a happily ever after…) Beyoncé, meanwhile, must have a mighty strong index finger to carry the weight of her 18 carat blinder (we always suspected she was super-human…)

Intrigued by the dazzling collateral that ever-so-casually graces the hands of your favourite A-listers? Below are some of the priciest, sparkliest, and sweetest celebrity engagement rings around - and the love stories behind them.

Princess Diana's engagement ring

Diana chose her engagement ring – featuring an oval 12-carat Ceylon sapphire set in 18-carat white gold, surrounded by 14 solitaire diamonds – from a selection at Garrard’s jewellers. Costing £28,000 at the time, many were surprised that the princess-to-be opted for a ring that ‘anyone’ could buy, instead of choosing a bespoke style. Some even called it the ‘Commoner’s Sapphire,’ but Diana clearly loved the ring, continuing to wear it even after her divorce from Prince Charles.

Kate Middleton's engagement ring

William proposed to Kate with his mother Diana’s 18 carat sapphire and diamond engagement ring on a trip to Kenya, later revealing that he had to carry the valuable heirloom around in a rucksack for about three weeks before proposing. ‘Obviously, [my mother]’s not going to be around to share in any of the fun and excitement of it all, so this is my way of keeping her sort of close to it all,’ William explained at the press conference announcing his engagement. ‘I just hope I look after it,’ Kate added.

Angelina Jolie's engagement ring

Angelina’s dazzling engagement ring – a white diamond style featuring 16-carat gems, designed with Robert Procop - reportedly set Brad back about $250,000. ‘Brad had a specific vision for this ring, which he realised over a year-long collaboration with Robert,’ the jeweller’s team revealed in a statement. ‘He wanted every aspect of it to be perfect.’ Angelina then specifically asked to keep the ring when she filed for divorce earlier this year. Sob.

Beyoncé's engagement ring

He liked it, so he put a ring on it. Jay Z proposed to Queen B with an 18-carat, octagon diamond ring set in a platinum base, designed by jeweller to the stars Lorraine Schwartz. It’s rumoured to have set the rapper-turned-mogul back about $5 million, and still ranks as one of the most expensive engagement rings of all time. Such is the quality of the stone, it’s been certified by a diamond expert as truly exceptional. As Beyoncé herself would put it, flawless.

Kate Moss's engagement ring

Jamie Hince reportedly tried to track down the diamond engagement ring worn by one of Kate’s favourite 1920’s icons, Zelda Fitzgerald (wife of the ultimate chronicler of the Jazz Age, F. Scott Fitzgerald), but his search proved fruitless. Eventually, using sketches of the original, he had a jeweller design a similar style for the supermodel, which features a large diamond set in a diamond-studded band.

Blake Lively's engagement ring

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds tied the knot in secret back in 2012. Blake’s engagement ring featured a 12 carat oval diamond in light pink, off-set with pave diamonds, and was designed by the A-list’s jeweller of choice, Lorraine Schwartz.

Jennifer Lopez's engagement ring

While Jenny from the block has been engaged four times, her ring from third fiancé Ben Affleck was the priciest. The singer received a ring bearing a six carat pink diamond from the actor, bought from Harry Winston and reportedly worth $1.2 million. When their engagement ended two years later, Jennifer is said to have returned the ring.

Jennifer Aniston's engagement ring

Justin Theroux proposed to Jen An with a seriously huge ring, boasting an eight-carat radiant cut diamond thought to be worth around $500,000. ‘It’s a rock, I know,’ she said to a New York Times reporter dazzled by the gem. ‘He rocked it up. It took me a while to get used to it,’ she added, before admitting that her tastes were usually more minimalist. ‘I’m not a diamond girl. I’m more Indian jewellery and stuff,' she explained.

Queen Elizabeth II's engagement ring

When Philip Mountbatten proposed to the then-Princess Elizabeth during a walk around her family estate at Balmoral in 1946, she accepted without consulting her parents. She received an engagement ring bearing a square-cut diamond, with smaller diamonds on the band - all of which came from a tiara owned by Philip's mother.
