The Rules Of Wearing Tights

Tights, or no tights? That is the big fashion question

Your grandmother said that you should only wear tights if there is an ‘R’ in the month. Others declare that tights season is determined by the temperature – only allowed when it’s sub-10 degrees, perhaps? But then Cara Delevingne just rocked 10 deniers on the Burberry front row on a gloriously sunny day, and no one ever told Alexa Chung to take off her hosiery just because it was May?

So these are the fashion rules worth following when it comes to wearing tights, plus a few myths debunked…

Every season, except for summer, is tights season

Let’s just use our common sense on this one and agree that if it’s really hot outside, we’ll all leave the tights in the drawer. Easy.

Clear nail varnish doesn’t permanently fix ladders

But apparently wetting and then freezing a new pair overnight will strengthen the Nylon significantly. Just remember to defrost them properly before trying to put them on at six o’clock on a chilly December morning.

Street style

Take your AW16 styling cue from Prada’s Argyll knits, or Saint Laurent’s smoky Seventies tints. Very Parisian It-girl.

Don’t be scared of coloured tights

How cool does this Valentino colour palette look? Pale pink legs with a hot pink midi-dress make for a clever tonal styling trick.

… Or sparkly tights

Just as fun as coloured tights, as demonstrated by Alexa.

A word on nude tights

If you’re going to go nude, choose a pair with no shine, that’s properly colour-matched to your skin tone. No one wants to look like a mannequin, do they?

What shoes should I wear tights with?

Popular myths; tights don’t go with trainers, open-toe sandals, courts or ballet flats. A quick scan of the street style set proves that they definitely, definitely do.

But definitely don’t wear…

Those tights with the funny toe-holes. They are not like fingerless gloves, and people can definitely spot the strange discrepancy between your toe colour and leg colour.
