Unlike the street style days of yore (a whole three years ago) the scene on the sidewalk doesn’t so dramatically switch up on a seasonal basis. Yes, there are always new clothes, new catwalk swipes, new combinations… but nowadays the fast-paced entire wardrobe switch-up is redundant. We’re most impressed by the ladies who mix old with new, high with low, and aren’t afraid to wear last season’s clothes. In fact, they look all the more savvy for reinventing trusted favourites rather than relying on box-fresh trends to carry closet kudos.

So in honour of this practice, we’ve sifted through some of the very best street style looks of 2014 to work out which ones have staying power. All of the following trends are still very much in line with the runways of S/S’15 and, we’re sure considering fashion’s slightly slower pace, beyond…

1. SCARF SKILLS:

From natty neckerchiefs to slinky skinny silk strips, there’s still plenty of fooling around with foulards. Basically it’s a one-stop 1970s in… so if you aren’t ready for flares or don’t fancy a macramé tank top, then here’s your nod to the decade.

2. UTILITY UNIFORM:

Khaki, excess pockets, boiler-suits and loose-fits… there’s still a utilitarian dress code for fashion’s most casual comrades.

3. DO IT ALL DENIM:

Head-to-toe and back again, just when you thought denim could’ve peaked and pushed itself over the edge… it powers on. And for S/S’15 it’s along the street style lines we’ve seen – sleek, tailored, clean washes, smart.

4. BAGS OF FUN:

Silly arm candy continues to provide LOLs and instagram-worthy snaps. Quite simply, what’s not to love? It holds your stuff and makes you and others chuckle.

5. KNOTS, BOWS, STRAPS, TIES:

If there’s a fussy way of doing something up, then it’s in. The S/S’15 catwalks have been sent to challenge you. Get practicing now like this early-bird bunch.

6. STEP RIGHT INTO THE 1970s:

Sumptous suede coats and jackets, kicky flares, platforms, crochet and psych-rock florals… this is one of the new season’s biggies, but it’s already been styled out to modern perfection on the streets. Check out these ladies for inspo.

7. BUT DON’T FORGET THE ‘60S:

And in particular, the miniskirt. We’ve never seen so many lithe legs around town. For the full mod look, they’re best worn with midi heels and a rollneck. Balances out the flesh flashing, too.

8. AWKWARD PANTS:

[ASP]

Ankle swinging, a bit baggy, probably high-waisted… the awkward trouser is going strong well into spring/summer. Expect them in suits or to be worn with outsize cotton poplin.

9. TASSEL TAKEOVER:

If it ain’t got tassels on, it ain’t worth a pavement parade! Fringing forges ahead via leather skirts, swishy bags, raw-hemmed bouclé and savagely torn denim… Basically can fringe it in your own way but still be in on a very big trend.

10. DOWN’N’SHIRTY:

From pretty shirts (see Leandra Medine in Rosie Assoulin above) to preppy shirtwaister dresses or giant button throughs layered over tailored trousers, there’s plenty of love to come for the not-so-humble shirt.

11. SUPER-RICH NEUTRALS:

Cream, off-white, beige and biscuit shades layered up in textures and then beholden to a chauffeur lifestyle = the (super-wealthy or aspirational) purist’s blueprint for today and tomorrow
