How Many Of Hollywood's Redheads Are Naturally Ginger?

Redheads are taking over Hollywood, but whose is a dye job?

Redheads may recieve stick in the school playground, but in the Hollywood arena ginger hair possesses star quality. Us cinephiles are hailing ginger as the hair colour du jour. Amy Adams and Emma Stone star in films that are leading this year’s award season race to win critical acclaim: Arrival (starring Adams), and La La Land (starring Stone) are both nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture.

Nominated for four BAFTA awards including Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay is Tom Ford's psychodrama Nocturnal Animals, which stars three beautiful redheads: Amy Adams, Isla Fisher and breakout star Ellie Bamber.

And it doesn't stop there. Nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role and for the BAFTA Rising Star award is Lucas Hedges for his performance in Manchester by the Sea. What's more, Isabelle Huppert won her Best Actress category for her performance in Elle, for which she is also nominated for an Academy Award, and, incidentally, Jessica Chastain is also in the midst of the award season steeplechase - she was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actress for her performance in Miss Sloane. 'As a child I didn’t like it because it made me different,' Jessica Chastain told Instyle about being a redhead. 'But as I grew older and more comfortable, it became a badge of honour'. And on top of that, Julianne Moore, Eddie Redmayne and Michael Fassbender are more ginger-haired Hollywood royalty who have also received critical acclaim in recent years.

'Red and green should never be seen' is the old saying, but not for these flame-haired A-listers

Having flaming locks is rare - less than 2 percent of the world's population is ginger - so considering that there are so many award winning redheads in Hollywood suggests it is the hair colour of the moment. But while redheads may be rare, real redheads are even rarer - especially in Hollywood. Out of all the ginger tones gracing the red carpet over recent years (copper, strawberry blonde, orange, auburn...) whose hair is nautural and whose is a (really great) dye job?

Which Celebrities Are Not Naturally Ginger?

While some people may attempt to disguise their red hair, being ginger has the desired effect in Hollywood. Emma Stone and Amy Adams who are naturally blonde (yeah, really) have found success in dyeing their hair red. They both owe their recognition to a dye job, because when it comes to hair colour, redheads tend to stand out.

Amy Adams dyed her strawberry blonde hair a dark red for the TV show Dr Vegas in 2004, and after a short blonde spell during 2005 when she starred in The Wedding Date (in which, interestingly, the female lead, Debra Messing was red-haired - but a natural), she stuck to a gorgeous ginger/auburn shade. She then popped up on our radar as the red-haired lost princess in Enchanted, and from then it was clear she was staying ginger for the long haul.

Emma Stone is naturally blonde (and while on the subject of 'natural', Emma's real name is Emily) and she played blonde Gwen Stacy - Peter Parker's love interest - in The Amazing Spider-Man. However, she first burst onto the scene in 2007 as fiery redhead Jules in Superbad, alongside Jonah Hill and Michael Cera, and has kept the auburn hair ever since. 'I identify most with red hair,' she told Stylecaster. 'My mom’s a redhead, so maybe I grew up seeing it more than seeing myself in a mirror.' Fast forward to now and she is Hollywood's sweetheart with trademark red hair, picking up the Golden Globe for Best Performance in a Motion Picture and nominated for the Oscar for Best Actress as well as the BAFTA for Leading Actress, all for her singing-and-dancing performance La La Land.'

The story is the same for Mad Men star Christina Hendricks, Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner and Poldark actress Eleanor Tomlinson, who all grew up blonde but make very convincing redheads.
