The Queen has urged for ‘quiet thinking and contemplation’ during her address at the opening of the Fifth Session of the Scottish Parliament at Holyrood, Edinburgh.

As debate and confusion over the future of the United Kingdom continues following the vote to leave the European Union on 23 June, her Majesty encourages us all to “stay calm and collected” in these hard times.

Good advice indeed.

There has been talk of another bid for independence from Scotland following the Brexit results, although Scotland’s future in the EU would not be assured following a breakaway from Great Britain.

The Royal Family’s official Instagram account posted the Queen’s statement alongside a shot of her at the Scottish Parliament yesterday.

"We all live and work in an increasingly complex and demanding world, where events and developments can, and do, take place at remarkable speed; and retaining the ability to stay calm and collected can at times be hard.

“As @scotparl has successfully demonstrated over the years, one hallmark of leadership in such a fast-moving world is allowing sufficient room for quiet thinking and contemplation, which can enable deeper, cooler consideration of how challenges and opportunities can be best addressed." The Queen, as she opens the Fifth Session of the Scottish Parliament at Holyrood, Edinburgh.”

As ever, the Queen remains politically neutral, but her words appear to advise for a cooling off period before any big decisions are made.
